It took an hour to walk those streets home
and on the way I saw
where I was without the illusion
of middle class comfort and pretense
We say hello as we pass each other by
and smile,
nod in recognition
of our shared position
I see some of us sitting
in awkward places
with no proper seat
heads hanging in defeat
Exhausted
and not
even in
the shade
just there
where
they ran
out of steam.
I’m not there
yet
I think to myself
but I get it
I wonder where
they were going
before they just
gave up?
